Mercy Behavioral Health

Mental Retardation Services

At Mercy Behavioral Health, we help people set personal goals and gain the skills they need to make their dreams come true. Some of the individuals we serve have been diagnosed with mental retardation. Some have mental health problems coupled with mental retardation.

Treatment begins by registering with an Independent Supports Coordinator who can explain the programs offered and help with paperwork. Call us at 412-344-6400 to arrange a tour or to request more information about our Day Services Programs, which include:

  • Adult Training Facilities
    • Individuals receive vocational and socialization training that enhances communication as well as basic life skills. Opportunities are presented for community volunteer work as well as work for pay. Participants may attend an adult training facility for up to 30 hours per week.
  • Senior Program
    • This is an adult training facility designed specifically for people 50 years of age or older who desire a slower pace. Opportunities are also presented for community involvement and employment.
  • Vocational Training
    • Not only do we provide work-readiness training, we follow through by serving as job coaches to optimize success. We also perform evaluations that assess a person's strengths and interests so that he or she can make good job choices.

Residential

To best serve individual needs, Mercy Behavioral Health offers residential choices, which must be authorized by an Independent Supports Coordinator. For a tour or for more information, call us at 412-344-6400. Options include:

  • Community Living Arrangement (CLA)
    • This option targets individuals who require supervised housing. Levels of support vary from a minimum of 30 hours of support per week to 24 hours staff supervision. We encourage residents to participate in community and volunteer activities, promoting independent living and socialization skills.
  • Supported Housing
    • Perfect for those who require little supervision, this option includes no more than 30 hours of staff support per week. Individuals live in their own home or apartment, and staff supply life skills training as needed.
  • Family Living
    • Residents live with a companion, a couple, or a family, who provide training, supervision, and support. The family/companion(s) work with the individual to help him or her develop skills and build relationships within the community.
  • In-Home Services
    • An option suitable for adults and children who reside with their natural families, services are based on individual needs as well as funds available to meet those needs. We help the family by providing special therapies, transportation for the individual, and training.
  • Respite
    • Temporary housing is available within our supervised, residential program as a short-term solution when the primary caretaker is unable to care for the individual Self-determination is at the heart of our mental retardation program. We encourage individuals to determine the substance, texture and direction of their lives. They have the authority to make their own decisions.
