First Aid for Burns
Immediate treatment of serious burns is important to prevent fluid loss and infection.
Important and Immediate Steps to Take
- The first step to helping a burn victim is to minimize damage to the skin by removing the agent (e.g., put out the fire, flush liquid chemicals off the site with water).
- Apply a cool, moist compress or cool water to burn area for five to ten minutes. Applying an ice compress may further damage tissue!
- If it is a chemical burn, flush liquid chemicals off the skin with cool running water and then seek immediate medical attention.
- If clothing is stuck to burned skin, DON'T remove it.
- Avoid breaking blisters. Do NOT remove skin.
- Seek medical attention if the burn is larger than the size of the palm of your hand and blisters.
Treatment for Serious Burns
Depending upon the size and severity of the burn, treatment at your local emergency room may not be enough. Serious burns require treatment at and possibly admission to a specialized burn treatment center.
